Seattle dead whale

Seattle dead whale, Scientists are trying to figure out what to do with a smelly whale carcass that washed up in Burien over the weekend.

Plans to remove massive whale may be in the works as early as Monday, but it’s going to take some serious effort to get it off the beach.

Over the weekend, people flocked to see the fin whale at Seahurst Park.  Only half of the whale washed up on the beach.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is asking if any local schools are interested in the skull of the whale to use as a teaching aid.

But it's still going to be at least a few days before the giant fin whale is removed from the beach.

The whale is the second largest whale species in the world and can grow up to six stories long.

The carcass washed up sometime Saturday morning, and marine biologists think the whale may have been hit by a ship in the Pacific, causing half of the body to stick against the boat's hull.   It was then dragged into the Puget Sound.

Fin whales don't usually come into the Sound.

Biologists have finished examining and taking samples of the whale, which they think died within the last week or so.  Because half the whale is missing, scientists don't know if it's a male or female.

Though the carcass brought out hundreds of people out to take a look, the smell may start to keep people away.

Officials told KIRO 7 the last time several fin whales died in Puget Sound was in the early 2000s.
