Mclennan County Disaster Area, Gov. Rick Perry said Thursday he is declaring McLennan County a disaster area in the wake of the West explosion and will request an emergency declaration from President Obama, whom he said has promised quick action.
“Last night was truly a nighmare scenario for that community,” Perry said at a briefing with Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, law enforcement and emergency management officials, and state agency heads.
Perry cited the work of state emergency management officials and the local community. He said the state will continue to help, including the Texas Department of Public Safety and National Guard.
Perry said he appreciated a call from President Obama.
“President Obama called from Air Force One as he was en route to Boston,” Perry said. “We greatly appreciate his call, and his gracious offer of support, of course, and the quick turnaround of the emergency declaration that will be forthcoming, and his offer of prayers.”
Obama attended an inter-faith vigil in Boston Thursday, to honor those killed and wounded in a terrorist bombing there Monday.
